In this episode of “Finding That Next Gear,” Beau welcomes Brett Trainer, a former corporate professional turned entrepreneur, to discuss his journey from corporate America to creating a successful business aimed at helping others escape the corporate grind. Brett shares his story of leaving a 25-year corporate career, transitioning through management consulting, and eventually discovering fractional leadership. His mission, as highlighted on his LinkedIn profile, is to empower 10,000 Gen Xers to leave the 9-to-5 grind and achieve freedom. This mission emerged after he realized he no longer enjoyed his consulting work and sought a more fulfilling path.
Brett recounts how he rebranded his podcast to “The Corporate Escapee” to connect with others like him. Despite a slow start, his presence on TikTok grew, eventually amassing nearly 30,000 followers, which opened up new business opportunities. His journey was marked by accidental discoveries and learning on the go, which he believes is common among successful entrepreneurs.
Beau and Brett discuss the challenges of transitioning from corporate jobs to entrepreneurship, including the need for support from family. Brett emphasizes the importance of transparency and regular communication with his wife to maintain a healthy relationship during this transition. He also highlights the importance of taking action and being comfortable with imperfection as crucial traits for entrepreneurs.
Brett’s current focus is on creating awareness about the possibilities outside corporate life and providing a community for like-minded individuals. He helps people understand their options, such as fractional roles and consulting, and supports them in finding new paths that offer flexibility and freedom. Both Brett and Beau agree that confidence and taking action are essential for success in entrepreneurship and fractional work.
